Welcome!

Welcome to Life in the Middle. This is a blog created by me, Karry Santiago, a seventh grade science teacher that has been teaching middle school since 1997. I have a degree in biology from U.C. Riverside and earned my credential from UCR as well. I am currently working on my master's degree from Walden University. I will be using this blog as a place for middle school teachers and students to share their ideas, opinions, and stories. I hope to have my students up and blogging soon.

Monitoring My GAME Plan

Reflecting on my progress towards reaching my goals for my GAME plan, I can see that I have not made as much progress as I would have liked. I need to determine whether the strategies I have selected are working (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2010). Unfortunately, one of the teachers that worked at my school was killed in a car accident last weekend. Needless to say, everyone has been touched by the death of our colleague. It has not been an appropriate time to discuss creating a technology committee. I will continue to monitor and evaluate the goals I created for my GAME plan.

Goal 1: To model ethical use of Internet resources by citing references and holding students accountable by requiring a reference section for all digital projects for all information, graphics, or videos students use. The goal is based on the standard 4a, Advocate, model, and teach legal and ethical use of digital information and technology (ISTE, 2008).

Finding information and resources:

I have found the state standard that addresses ethical use of information. The standard is 3.1 Students will demonstrate ethical, legal, and safe use of information in print, media, and online resources (California Dept. of Education, 2011).
I still need to find or create a lesson to teach students how to cite their sources correctly.
I also need to talk with the librarian to discuss if she knows a good lesson for teaching the ethical use of information.
I still need to find a good rubric to use when grading their digital projects that includes a section for references.

Modifications:

I do not think I need to make any changes to this part of my GAME plan because I am making progress towards meeting this goal.

What I have learned:

I have learned that there are state standards that address the ethical use of information.
There is no district policy addressing plagiarism or the ethical use of information.

New questions:

Should there be two separate categories for print and image references on the rubric?
What format should I have students use MLA or APA?
Should there be a district policy for appropriate use of information?

Goal 2: To participate in a leadership role to increase technology infusion and to help increase my colleagues use of technology in their classroom. The goal is based on the standard, 5b Exhibit leadership by participating in decision making and developing technology skills of others (ISTE, 2008).

Finding information and resources:

I have not found any information on how to create a technology committee.
I need to meet with the library tech to determine what the technology needs are for the school and whether a tech committee would be necessary.
I need to discuss with the principal about creating a tech committee.
I am a member of the district forward strategy committee (district tech committee)

Changes or modifications:
Reflecting on the goal I created, I see that I was trying to do too much. The goal is not reachable in a short time frame.
I will continue to try and create a school tech committee but it will not occur this school year.
I will continue to help colleagues increase their technology use.

What I have learned:

Many teachers are hesitant to make yet another change in their teaching. Common core has been overwhelming for many of my colleagues.
Some teachers do not use the available technology because they are not comfortable using it themselves.
I have helped a number of teachers to use Google Drive and they use it regularly.

New questions:

Is a technology committee essential to the school site?
What technology needs must be addressed?
How can I encourage colleagues to reach out of their comfort zone when using technology?

  1. I think you bring up some really good questions about the function of a tech committee. You question whether or not one is needed. I think before you create the tech committee and meet with the principal to discuss its potential, you have to have a clear idea of the committee's purpose. Is it simply an advisory group, like mine, where we communicate the teacher's perspective to admin who in turn relays our desires to the district? Or do you want a more hands on tech committee, one that is available to assist teachers with tech integration? If so, how would that happen? My idea of what a tech committee is all about clashes with what the tech committee at my school is. Good luck with your endeavors. I will be interested to see what you discover as this process unfolds.

  2. Hey Karry,

Did you know that there options in microsoft word that allows user to type in source information and it will process ELA or APA style if you are uncertain which one to teach them when they site their sources. Using this technology will teach your students both formats even when they move on from your classroom and need to change different formats.

I say, don't worry about the time spent, worry about what technology you can keep using throughout the year so that students become very familiar with and can use in other areas of their lives.
