Welcome!

Welcome to Life in the Middle. This is a blog created by me, Karry Santiago, a seventh grade science teacher that has been teaching middle school since 1997. I have a degree in biology from U.C. Riverside and earned my credential from UCR as well. I am currently working on my master's degree from Walden University. I will be using this blog as a place for middle school teachers and students to share their ideas, opinions, and stories. I hope to have my students up and blogging soon.

My Reflections on Educ. 6713

Reflections on My GAME Plan

According to Cennamo, Ross, and Ertmer (2010), it is important to set goals for your own professional growth.  I created two goals or myself in the beginning of this course. The GAME plan includes setting goals, taking action, monitoring progress, and evaluating whether goals were achieved (Cennamo et al, 2010). Reflecting on my GAME plan, I can see that it will take longer than I expected to reach the goals I set for myself. While progress has been made, I have had to change the plan as time has gone on.

Goal 1: To model ethical use of Internet resources by citing references and holding students accountable by requiring a reference section for all digital projects for all information, graphics, or videos students use. The goal is based on the standard 4a, Advocate, model, and teach legal and ethical use of digital information and technology (ISTE, 2008).

Goal 2: To participate in a leadership role to increase technology infusion and to help increase my colleagues use of technology in their classroom. The goal is based on the standard, 5b Exhibit leadership by participating in decision making and developing technology skills of others (ISTE, 2008).

For goal 1, I have included in my own worksheets and notes where I found the information and images I have used. I have also included references as part of each project I am having my students create. Correctly citing sources is included in the rubric for grading students’ projects. I feel that I have reached this goal and plan to continue modeling the ethical use of information for my students. Finding the California library standards for citing references was a big help to justify requiring students to cite their references. There is no district wide policy for acceptable use for students. I want students to realize that copying and pasting someone else’s work is wrong and is considered plagiarism. I never really considered the fact that when I copy an image without citing where it came from, I am modeling for the students that it is okay to not give credit to the owner of the image. I am now making a point to show students where I got images and information from.
Goal 2 has been a challenge for me to achieve. During week 4, when I monitored my progress, I realized that the goal I created was too much to be able to accomplish. I decided that creating a technology committee this year was not going to happen. I have a principal that does not understand technology so does not see the need. I plan to work with him to get him to see the importance of technology in today’s educational system. I am hoping to get a tech committee started at the beginning of next year. I have been working with colleagues to increase their use of technology. I want to continue working with more teachers next semester. I hope to be able to teach anyone that wants more help using technology to incorporate more of the 21st century skills we need our students to have.

Using the GAME plan with my students should be an interesting task. I would like to have my advisory students create a goal that they would like to achieve by the end of the semester. I then would have the students write up a plan on how they will reach their goal. Throughout the semester, I will have the students reflect on their progress towards reaching their goal and see if they need to modify their plan. It would be great to see the students achieve their goals. If they reach their goal, I will have them create a new goal to work towards. If their goal is not met, I will have them continue to work towards completing their goal. I could also have my science students create a goal to reach by the end of the semester and have them plan, monitor, and evaluate their progress towards achieving their goal.

Adjustments to Instructional Practices
This course has continued to teach me about the importance of integrating technology into my classroom. I have learned about problem-based learning, online collaboration, and digital storytelling. Each of these strategies incorporates technology to make learning more relevant and interesting for students. I have been using some of these strategies without realizing what the strategy was called. I hope to continue to incorporate more opportunities for students to use these great strategies in my class. The challenge I face is access to technology which I am trying to work on by getting more technology into the school.
Problem-based learning (PBL) allows students to learn content as they learn higher order thinking skills (Laureate Education Inc., 2009b).  PBL allows students to master content standards using higher order thinking skills to find a possible solution to a problem the teacher provides to the students. PBL is an instructional strategy that I have not widely implemented into my classroom instruction because I have never attended a staff development or training that addressed PBL. I want to use PBL more in my teaching so I am going to try and find a training or webinar that I can complete to learn about creating good problems for students to research.

Online collaboration is something I have only done with my students a few times. . Benefits of online collaboration include: allowing students to work in and out of class, challenges students to perform at higher levels, and allows learning language from native speakers (Laureate Education Inc., 2009c). I think the experiences I have gained throughout this course will help me better integrate online collaboration and social networking into my teaching because before starting at Walden, I had never participated in a blog, discussion, wiki, or any of the other web 2.0 tools I have learned to use throughout my courses. I plan to incorporate at least one online collaboration project each quarter for students to complete.

Digital storytelling is the sharing of words, thoughts, music, pictures, music, narration or video (Laureate Education Inc., 2009b). Digital storytelling reaches across the curriculum and allows students to use their higher level thinking skills in any subject. Digital storytelling builds skills in research, analyzing, creative thinking, problem solving, and interpersonal (Laureate Education Inc., 2009b). I had my students create a children’s book this year on the cell. It was the first time I ever used digital storytelling and it was an exhausting but enriching experience for my students and me. I definitely will have students do this project again next year. I also plan on having students create a story of a body system during second semester. Since my students have already done this once, I hope to see some very amazing projects.

Throughout this course, I have learned to set goals for myself that are reachable even if they have to be modified. Plans may have to change due to unexpected situations but as long as progress is being made, I feel like I am accomplishing something. Technology should play an important role in educating today’s students. I am continuously working to learn and use new technology that will help my students become more successful, learn the standards, and learn the 21st century skills they need to compete in today’s global society.

Monitoring My GAME Plan

Reflecting on my progress towards reaching my goals for my GAME plan, I can see that I have not made as much progress as I would have liked. I need to determine whether the strategies I have selected are working (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2010). Unfortunately, one of the teachers that worked at my school was killed in a car accident last weekend. Needless to say, everyone has been touched by the death of our colleague. It has not been an appropriate time to discuss creating a technology committee. I will continue to monitor and evaluate the goals I created for my GAME plan.

Finding information and resources:

I have found the state standard that addresses ethical use of information. The standard is 3.1 Students will demonstrate ethical, legal, and safe use of information in print, media, and online resources (California Dept. of Education, 2011).
I still need to find or create a lesson to teach students how to cite their sources correctly.
I also need to talk with the librarian to discuss if she knows a good lesson for teaching the ethical use of information.
I still need to find a good rubric to use when grading their digital projects that includes a section for references.

Modifications:

I do not think I need to make any changes to this part of my GAME plan because I am making progress towards meeting this goal.

What I have learned:

I have learned that there are state standards that address the ethical use of information.
There is no district policy addressing plagiarism or the ethical use of information.

New questions:

Should there be two separate categories for print and image references on the rubric?
What format should I have students use MLA or APA?
Should there be a district policy for appropriate use of information?

Goal 2: To participate in a leadership role to increase technology infusion and to help increase my colleagues use of technology in their classroom. The goal is based on the standard, 5b Exhibit leadership by participating in decision making and developing technology skills of others (ISTE, 2008).

Finding information and resources:

I have not found any information on how to create a technology committee.
I need to meet with the library tech to determine what the technology needs are for the school and whether a tech committee would be necessary.
I need to discuss with the principal about creating a tech committee.
I am a member of the district forward strategy committee (district tech committee)

Changes or modifications:
Reflecting on the goal I created, I see that I was trying to do too much. The goal is not reachable in a short time frame.
I will continue to try and create a school tech committee but it will not occur this school year.
I will continue to help colleagues increase their technology use.

What I have learned:

Many teachers are hesitant to make yet another change in their teaching. Common core has been overwhelming for many of my colleagues.
Some teachers do not use the available technology because they are not comfortable using it themselves.
I have helped a number of teachers to use Google Drive and they use it regularly.

New questions:

Is a technology committee essential to the school site?
What technology needs must be addressed?
How can I encourage colleagues to reach out of their comfort zone when using technology?

Carrying Out My GAME Plan

Last week I created a GAME plan to address two areas of the ISTE standards that I felt I want to strengthen my skills in. It is time to begin to take action to meet the goals I created (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2010). Creating a plan has helped guide me towards reaching the goals I have set for myself. The goals have been difficult to make progress towards this week. There was two false fire alarms this week. My principal and assistant principal were both in closed door meetings and at district meetings during my prep periods last week. I also have a four day weekend due to Veteran’s day.

Goal 1: To model ethical use of Internet resources by citing references and holding students accountable by requiring a reference section for all digital projects for all information, graphics, or videos students use (ISTE, 2008).

Resources needed:

Rubrics for digital projects that include a section for correctly citing references
Meet with librarian or English teacher to create a mini-lesson to demonstrate for students how to cite different sources such as web pages, videos, and images.
Meet with English colleagues to discuss proper citing of references so we are on the same page and ask if they have a rubric the department already uses.

Additional information needed:

Guidelines for citing images and videos found on the Internet.
I need to find where I have gotten images I used in presentations so I can model the ethical use of information.

Steps taken so far:

I have begun to include information about where images were retrieved from on presentations and worksheets I have created.
Downloaded California Library Standards. Determined that the standard I need to focus on is standard 3.1 Students will demonstrate ethical, legal, and safe use of information in print, media, and online resources (California Dept. of Education, 2011).

Goal 2: To participate in a leadership role to increase technology infusion and to help increase my colleagues use of technology in their classroom (ISTE, 2008).

Resources needed:

Guidelines for creating a site technology committee.
Technology plans from other schools.

Additional information needed:

Survey to determine if staff wants to use more technology in their lessons.
Discuss with principal to determine if we can create a technology committee.

Steps taken so far:

I am a member of the district technology committee and will be attending the next meeting which is in January.

While I have made some progress in meeting my goals, a lot more work needs to be done. I am open for suggestions and would appreciate if anyone has or knows where to find guidelines for creating a technology committee.

Developing a Personal GAME Plan

According to the Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) there are five standards that effective teachers use to engage students, improve learning, enrich professional practice, and provide positive models for students (ISTE standards, 2008). Many of the standards I am very confident and comfortable with but there are two indicators that I want to strengthen my proficiency in.  The two indicators that I want to strengthen my skills in are: 4a. Advocate, model, and teach legal and ethical use of digital information and technology and 5b. Exhibit leadership by participating in decision making and developing technology skills of others (ISTE standards, 2008). Using the GAME plan I will develop a plan to improve my abilities in these two indicators. The GAME plan consists of: setting Goals, taking Action, Monitoring progress, and Evaluating whether goals were achieved (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2010).

Goal 1: To model ethical use of Internet resources by citing references and holding students accountable by requiring a reference section for all digital projects for all information, graphics, or videos students use.

Actions:
  1.   For all multimedia presentations, worksheets, or pictures I use in class, I will create a    reference section and cite where the information was obtained.
  2.                I will create a mini lesson to demonstrate to students how to cite different types of sources   they may use in their projects.
  3.                 For all Internet and digital projects, I will include in the rubric a section for citing references    correctly.
  4. Work with English teachers to make sure I am teaching students the correct format.

      .Monitoring:
  •     I will check all worksheets and presentations I create to make sure I have a reference section.
  •   Review all students’ Internet and digital projects to make sure students are including a reference section and citing resources correctly.
Evaluation:
  • I will review any worksheets or presentations I create to make sure I included a reference section
  • For students, I will check their rubric scores for the reference section to determine if I need to reteach citing and reference skills

Goal 2: To participate in a leadership role to increase technology infusion and to help increase my colleagues use of technology in their classroom.

Actions:
  1. Become a member of the district forward strategy committee which is the district technology committee.
  2. Talk with the principal about creating a site technology committee.
  3. Work with administration to schedule staff development time to help any teachers that want to utilize more technology in their teaching.

Monitoring:
  • Talk with colleagues about possible technology trainings they would be interested in attending
  • Attend district technology meetings
  • Monitor progress with principal about creating technology committee.
Evaluating:
  • Review attendance at district technology meetings.
  • Review attendance of professional development offered to teachers.
  • Creation of site technology committee
